Protagonist (“we,” “our,” or “us”) is committed to protecting your privacy. This Privacy Policy explains how we handle information when you use the Protagonist mobile application (the “App”).

Information We Collect

Data Stored Locally on Your Device

Protagonist stores the following information locally on your iOS device:

  • Episode Information: Titles, descriptions, mood ratings, tags, and dates of episodes you create
  • Season Data: Your life seasons (years) and their associated episodes and themes
  • Mood & Streak Data: Mood history, streak counts, and historical tracking data
  • User Preferences: App settings, notification preferences, season themes, and customization choices
  • Statistics: Calculated analytics about your mood patterns, streaks, and episode history
  • Share Cards: Any share card designs you create within the App

Data We Do NOT Collect

We want to be clear about what we don’t collect:

  • We do NOT collect your personal information (name, email, phone number)
  • We do NOT track your location
  • We do NOT access your contacts
  • We do NOT collect device identifiers for tracking purposes
  • We do NOT send your data to external servers
  • We do NOT use analytics or tracking services
  • We do NOT share your data with third parties
  • We do NOT use cookies or similar tracking technologies

How We Use Your Information

All data collected by Protagonist is used solely to:

  • Display your episodes and seasons
  • Calculate and show your mood trends and streaks
  • Send you notifications/reminders (only if you enable them)
  • Provide statistics and insights about your life story
  • Generate Season Wrapped recaps
  • Sync data across your Apple devices via iCloud (if you enable iCloud sync)

Since all data processing happens locally on your device under your direct control, we process your data based on:

  • Consent: You voluntarily choose to create episodes and enter data
  • Contractual Necessity: To provide the App’s core functionality you requested
  • Legitimate Interests: To enable core features like streak tracking, mood analytics, and Season Wrapped

Data Storage and Security

Local Storage

All your data is stored locally on your device using:

  • iOS Secure Storage: We use Apple’s secure storage mechanisms (SwiftData/Core Data)
  • Encryption: Your data is protected by iOS’s built-in encryption when your device is locked
  • No Cloud Servers: We do not maintain any servers that store your personal data

iCloud Sync

If you choose to enable iCloud sync:

  • Your episode and season data is synced across your Apple devices using your personal iCloud account
  • This data is encrypted and stored in your private iCloud storage
  • We cannot access your iCloud data
  • This is entirely managed by Apple and subject to Apple’s Privacy Policy
  • You can disable iCloud sync at any time in the App settings

Third-Party Services

Protagonist does not use any third-party analytics, advertising, or tracking services.

If you purchase a subscription or lifetime access through the App Store:

  • Payment is processed entirely by Apple
  • We do not collect or store your payment information
  • Your purchase is subject to Apple’s Privacy Policy

Children’s Privacy

Protagonist does not knowingly collect personal information from children.

Age Requirements

  • European Union: You must be at least 16 years old (or the minimum age required in your country under local law)
  • Other regions: You must be at least 13 years old

If you are under the required age for your region, please do not use this App. If we learn that we have inadvertently collected information from a child under the required age, we will delete that information immediately.

Your Rights and Choices

You have complete control over your data:

Access Your Data

All your data is visible within the App at all times. There are no hidden databases or external storage.

Delete Your Data

You can delete your data at any time by:

  • Deleting individual episodes within the App
  • Deleting entire seasons within the App
  • Using the “Delete All Data” option in Settings
  • Deleting the App from your device (this permanently removes all local data)

Export Your Data

You can export your episode data from the App’s Settings menu as a PDF season book, CSV, or JSON backup.

Disable Notifications

You can turn off notifications at any time in:

  • The App’s Settings
  • Your device’s Settings → Notifications → Protagonist

Hidden Episodes

Episodes marked as hidden remain private and are excluded from lists and shared recaps.

Disable iCloud Sync

You can disable iCloud synchronization at any time in the App’s Settings.

GDPR Compliance (European Economic Area Users)

If you are located in the European Economic Area (EEA), United Kingdom, or Switzerland, you have enhanced data protection rights under the General Data Protection Regulation (GDPR) and equivalent laws.

Your GDPR Rights

  • Right of Access: You can view all your data within the App at any time
  • Right to Rectification: You can edit your episodes and data at any time through the App interface
  • Right to Erasure (“Right to be Forgotten”): You can delete your data at any time using the in-app deletion features
  • Right to Data Portability: You can export your data in standard formats (PDF, CSV, JSON)
  • Right to Object: You can choose not to enable optional features like notifications or iCloud sync
  • Right to Restrict Processing: You can limit how your data is used by disabling specific features
  • Right to Withdraw Consent: You can disable any optional features at any time without affecting core functionality

Since all data is stored locally on your device:

Data Retention

  • Active Use: We retain your data locally on your device for as long as you use the App
  • App Deletion: All local data is permanently deleted when you delete the App from your device
  • iCloud Data: If you use iCloud sync, data remains in your iCloud until you delete it manually or disable iCloud sync
  • No Server Retention: We do not store any of your data on our servers

Data Security

We take reasonable measures to protect your data:

  • All data stored locally is protected by iOS security features
  • Your device passcode/biometrics (Face ID/Touch ID) protect access to the App
  • We do not transmit your personal data over the internet (except for optional iCloud sync, which uses Apple’s encrypted channels)
  • We do not store your data on our servers

However, no method of electronic storage is 100% secure, and we cannot guarantee absolute security. You are responsible for keeping your device secure, using a strong device passcode, and protecting your Apple ID credentials.

International Data Transfers

Protagonist is available worldwide. Your data is stored locally on your device, regardless of your location.

If you use iCloud sync, your data may be transferred to Apple’s iCloud servers in various countries. Data transfers are protected by Apple’s security measures and subject to Apple’s Privacy Policy. For EEA users, Apple complies with GDPR requirements for international data transfers.

California Privacy Rights (CCPA)

If you are a California resident, since Protagonist does not collect, sell, or share personal information with third parties, most CCPA provisions do not apply. You still have the right to access your data, delete your data, and opt-out of data sale (we never sell data).

Changes to This Privacy Policy

We may update this Privacy Policy from time to time. We will notify you by posting the new policy on this page, updating the “Last Updated” date, and notifying you within the App for significant changes.
